The motorways radiating out — A-62, A-6, A-601 and A-11 — serve the larger towns well, but between two towns in different areas the bus usually means going through Valladolid.

Campo Grande station is in the city centre, next to the park of the same name, and serves high-speed trains to Madrid-Chamartín as well as trains towards Palencia, León and Burgos. Early on weekdays business travel peaks and the drop-off area fills with cars within minutes.

The capital and the towns right next to it, such as Laguna de Duero to the south and Arroyo de la Encomienda to the west, form a single urban area split by the Pisuerga river. Campo Grande station, both university hospitals and the trade fair grounds are here, and this is where most business trips to Madrid start.

When demand peaks

• Holy Week in Valladolid (Easter week): Valladolid's processions, with Gregorio Fernández's carvings and of international tourist interest, fill the centre and close many streets, especially on Good Friday. They coincide with holiday departures to Barajas, so it pays to book early and set the pickup outside the procession routes.
• Seminci film festival (October): The Valladolid International Film Week fills the city with guests and audiences for an autumn week, with screenings that end late and arrivals and departures via Campo Grande and Barajas.

Tip: Before booking a transfer to Villanubla, confirm your flight actually leaves from there: many routes are seasonal and flying from Barajas is the norm.
