The capital and the towns right next to it, such as Laguna de Duero to the south and Arroyo de la Encomienda to the west, form a single urban area split by the Pisuerga river. Campo Grande station, both university hospitals and the trade fair grounds are here, and this is where most business trips to Madrid start.

From Valladolid to Madrid and Barajas

From Valladolid the route joins the A-6, either via the A-62 to Tordesillas or south towards Adanero, and crosses the mountains through the AP-6 toll tunnel or over the Alto del León pass. Another option runs through Cuéllar and Segovia. For Barajas, the A-6 leads on to the M-40 or M-50 before reaching the city.

Around the province of Valladolid

Almost every trip within the province goes to or from the capital: appointments at Río Hortega or the Clínico, the train at Campo Grande, paperwork and the trade fair. The motorways radiating out — A-62, A-6, A-601 and A-11 — serve the larger towns well, but between two towns in different areas the bus usually means going through Valladolid.

Busiest times of year

• Holy Week in Valladolid (Easter week): Valladolid's processions, with Gregorio Fernández's carvings and of international tourist interest, fill the centre and close many streets, especially on Good Friday. They coincide with holiday departures to Barajas, so it pays to book early and set the pickup outside the procession routes.
• Holy Week in Medina de Rioseco (Easter week): Holy Week in Medina de Rioseco, also of international tourist interest, draws many visitors to a small town. Processions end at night, when there is no longer a bus back to the capital.
• Grape harvest in the Ribera (September and October): During the harvest the Ribera del Duero wineries get more visits and tastings, and autumn weekends around Peñafiel book up. For a winery route it pays to arrange both the car and the visits well ahead.
• Seminci film festival (October): The Valladolid International Film Week fills the city with guests and audiences for an autumn week, with screenings that end late and arrivals and departures via Campo Grande and Barajas.
• September fair and fiestas (early September): The Virgen de San Lorenzo fiestas in Valladolid move many people at night between the capital and the surrounding towns, exactly when public transport thins out.

Tip: Before booking a transfer to Villanubla, confirm your flight actually leaves from there: many routes are seasonal and flying from Barajas is the norm.
