Íscar, Simancas and Cigales: how to get from these three Valladolid towns to the station, Villanubla airport, the hospital and Madrid
Íscar, Simancas and Cigales sit at three different corners of the province, and each one heads out a different way. Simancas, to the west beside the A-62, and Cigales, to the north on the way to Palencia, belong to the capital's ring of towns: Campo Grande station is 12 km from Simancas and 19 km from Cigales. Íscar, in the Tierra de Pinares, looks first to Medina del Campo: its high-speed station is 37 km away, from 59,47 € per car. For flying, Villanubla has few routes and the usual answer ends up being Barajas, which you reach from Íscar for 229,12 €. The price is fixed before you book and is per car, not per person.

Why do Íscar, Simancas and Cigales work so differently?
All three are towns in the province of Valladolid, but geography separates them more than the map suggests. Simancas and Cigales belong to the capital's surrounding ring, the crown of municipalities that lives right up against the city: Simancas to the west, on the Pisuerga and beside the A-62 heading down towards Tordesillas, and Cigales to the north, in the valley of the same river, among the vineyards of the designation of origin that bears its name and with the A-62 towards Palencia close by. Íscar, by contrast, lies in the Tierra de Pinares, to the south-east, in an area of pine forest, vineyards and scattered villages where public transport is thin. For someone living in Simancas or Cigales, the capital is the centre of everything; for someone in Íscar, Medina del Campo weighs as much as Valladolid.
That difference shapes almost every journey. From Simancas and Cigales the trip to Campo Grande station, to the capital's hospitals or to the trade fair grounds is short and on fast roads, and the real question is whether it is worth parking in the centre or being dropped at the door. From Íscar the question is a different one: whether to go up to Valladolid or down to Medina del Campo, which has a high-speed station on the Madrid to Zamora and Galicia line and is also the health reference for its area. That is why this guide does not offer one recipe for all three, but deals with each town separately and then gathers what they share: the airport, the fog on the plateau, the festivities that close streets and the needs of anyone travelling with children or older people.
How do you get from Íscar to the station, the hospital and Madrid?
For the train, the most practical station from Íscar is usually Medina del Campo's high-speed station, which saves going up to the capital and crossing its incoming traffic. Trains leave from there for Madrid and for Zamora and Galicia, on timetables published by Renfe that are worth checking before fixing the pickup. For healthcare, Sacyl's health map places the Íscar basic health zone in the Valladolid Este area, with Medina del Campo hospital as its reference centre; for some specialities patients are referred to the capital. A trip to an appointment in Medina by car with a driver costs from 57,18 €, and the driver can wait or come back at the agreed time. It is not medical transport: it is a car to get to and from the appointment with someone who does not drive.
Towards Madrid, Íscar does not need to go through Valladolid. The natural route looks for the A-6 to the south through the Olmedo and Arévalo area, and from there carries on via Adanero and Villacastín to the mountains, which are crossed through the AP-6 toll tunnel or over the free road across the Alto del León pass. For Barajas you leave the A-6 for the M-40 or M-50 before entering the city. It is a journey a car with a driver handles door to door and with no changes, which counts for a lot in a town where the coach is scarce and does not always fit the time of a flight. The sensible alternative is to combine the two: a car to Medina del Campo and the high-speed train from there, when the train has a timetable that fits and the destination is close to the arrival station.
What changes when you leave from Simancas, on the western edge of the city?
Simancas is a town with an old quarter on the Pisuerga, with the castle that is now home to the Archivo General de Simancas, owned by the Ministry of Culture, and many residents who work in the capital. The A-62 passes beside the town, so getting into Valladolid is quick, but the last stretch to Campo Grande crosses busy streets early on weekdays and parking near the station is hard. That is where a car with a driver makes sense, for the early train or for a late return with luggage. To Villanubla airport, which lies north-west of the capital beside the León road, it is 21 km from Simancas, and you get there by skirting the city on the west side without crossing the centre.
The castle and the archive also draw visitors from outside, researchers who come to consult the collections and tourists who combine Simancas with Tordesillas or with the capital. Anyone arriving by train at Campo Grande for a day at the archive can link the trip to a pickup at closing time, without relying on the intercity bus. For healthcare, the assigned hospital depends on the basic health zone and is shown on the health card; either way, the capital's two university hospitals are close by. Towards Madrid, Simancas has the A-62 to Tordesillas on hand, where it joins the A-6, so there is no need to go into Valladolid to head down to Barajas or central Madrid, and the journey avoids the city's traffic lights.
And from Cigales, among the vineyards on the way to Palencia?
Cigales gives its name to the designation of origin that stretches between Valladolid and Palencia, known for its rosé wines, and lives halfway between the capital and the countryside. The A-62 towards Palencia passes nearby, so getting down to Valladolid takes a short while, and most journeys are to the city: work, shopping, errands and appointments. In Sacyl's health map, the Cigales basic health zone is listed among those of the Hospital Clínico Universitario area, which stands next to the Faculty of Medicine, in an area of narrow streets and little parking. A transfer to an appointment there costs from 30,64 €, and being dropped at the door saves circling for a space, something older patients in particular appreciate.
Wine also creates the opposite journey: visitors who arrive at Campo Grande station or at the airport and want to tour wineries without driving back. Winery visits run on fixed timetables and are usually booked in advance, especially at harvest time, in September and October, when tastings multiply across the Duero valley. The practical thing is to close the visits first and give the driver the order and time of each one, with the final pickup agreed. For the train, Campo Grande lies on the other side of the city and early in the morning the approach gets busy; for flying, Cigales is relatively close to Villanubla, which you reach by skirting the capital to the north. From Cigales you also head down to Madrid along the A-62 and the A-6 without crossing central Valladolid.
Villanubla or Barajas: which airport suits these three towns?
Valladolid airport, at Villanubla, is the closest to Simancas and Cigales, but it has few routes and several only in season, so before booking the transfer it is worth confirming that your flight leaves from there. When it does, the trip is short: from Cigales, from 39,88 € per car. For Íscar, Villanubla lies on the far side of the capital and the distance to Barajas, though greater, is covered almost entirely on dual carriageway. What happens most often in all three towns is ending up flying from Madrid, because the range of destinations and times is far wider. Aena publishes the routes in force at each airport on its website, along with the seasonal changes, and that is the place to look before deciding.
For Barajas, a car with a driver solves the problem of early flights, which no train from the province reaches in time. From Simancas the journey takes around 153 min along the A-62 and A-6 in daytime, with a pickup at home and a drop at the right terminal. The price is per car, so a family or a group of colleagues share a single amount, whereas the train and the coach are paid per ticket. On the way back it works the same way: the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign and follows the flight if its time changes. Your own car is still an option for short breaks, but long-stay parking at Barajas and driving over the mountains at night usually tip the balance on longer trips.
What should you bear in mind about fog, festivities, children and older people?
In winter, fog is common on the Valladolid plateau in the morning, and it affects the Íscar pine forests just as much as the Pisuerga plain at Simancas and Cigales. For an early train or flight it is worth bringing the pickup forward, and with snow on the Guadarrama you can ask when booking for the car to use the AP-6 tunnel. In Holy Week, Valladolid's processions close many streets in the centre, especially on Good Friday, just when the most people are leaving on holiday for Barajas; anyone living in the surrounding towns and heading to Campo Grande on those days should allow for diversions and set the drop-off away from the routes. In October the Seminci film festival fills the capital with audiences at screenings that finish late, and night-time returns to the towns are among the most requested journeys.
For families, the useful thing is to say when booking how many child seats are needed and how much luggage is coming, so the car is the right size; the calculator takes that into account in the fixed price. For older people going alone to an appointment, the transfer can be booked in their name from another city, with the traveller's phone number so the driver can let them know, and an adapted vehicle can be requested if they use a wheelchair. The same goes for the student coming home to Íscar from Medina del Campo station on a Friday night, when there is no bus left. In all three cases the invoice is issued to whoever pays, with VAT, and the waiting and cancellation conditions are on the help page.
Frequently asked questions
How much is it from Simancas to Campo Grande station?
From 23,67 € per car, VAT included. The calculator gives the exact price with your address, the date and the train time, and it is fixed before you book.
I live in Íscar: is Medina del Campo station or Valladolid better for me?
It depends on the train. For the Madrid to Zamora and Galicia line, Medina del Campo is closer and avoids the capital's traffic; for trains towards Palencia, León or Burgos you have to go to Campo Grande. Check the timetables on Renfe and book with the departure time to hand.
How much is Cigales to Barajas airport?
From 296,59 € per car and trip. Give the flight number and terminal when booking, and the driver works out the pickup time with the margin the airline asks for.
Can I book my mother's transfer to an appointment from another city?
Yes. You book with her address, the hospital's address and the appointment time, and add her phone number so the driver can let her know on arrival. If she needs an adapted vehicle, say so when booking.
Are there flights from Villanubla to my destination?
Villanubla has few routes and several are seasonal. Check on the Aena website before booking the transfer; if there is no flight, the usual option is to fly from Barajas.
