Valladolid (Villanubla) airport or Barajas: which airport suits the flight and the district, from the capital, Tierra de Campos, Tierra de Medina and the Ribera
It depends on the flight before the district. Valladolid airport, at Villanubla, is 14 km from the capital along the León road and has few routes, several of them seasonal only; if the flight leaves from there, the transfer is short, from 34,21 €. For almost every other destination the journey starts at Madrid-Barajas, 207 km and about 165 min along the A-6, from 261,98 € per car. The district tips the balance in borderline cases: Tierra de Campos and Medina de Rioseco have Villanubla next door, while Medina del Campo, Olmedo and Tordesillas already sit on the A-6 that leads to Madrid.

Which flights leave from Villanubla, and what should you check before booking?
Valladolid airport lies within the municipality of Villanubla, north-west of the capital and beside the N-601, the León road, in the middle of the plateau. It is an Aena airport with a single terminal, small and easy to get around, and with a reduced route map: a handful of domestic and island destinations all year round and others that only operate in summer or in specific campaigns. That makes it a convenient airport when the flight exists and a trap when its existence is taken for granted: the offer changes from one season to the next and Aena publishes it on the airport's page, with the airlines operating each route.
The province page gives the advice that saves the most grief: before booking a transfer to Villanubla, confirm that the flight actually leaves from there, because many routes are seasonal and flying from Barajas is the norm. The second check is fog. In winter it is common on the Valladolid plateau in the morning and at times affects operations at the airport itself, so for an early flight it is worth bringing the pickup forward and bearing in mind that the airline may divert or delay. The third is the return: the last flight of the day can land when there is no longer any public transport to the capital, let alone to the villages.
Why does almost everything end up at Barajas, and how do you get there from the province?
Barajas is the great airport of central Spain, with the international and long-haul connections Villanubla lacks, and for a province that looks to Madrid along the A-6 it is the natural airport for most journeys. From Valladolid it is 207 km and about 165 min: the A-62 to Tordesillas, the A-6 past Medina del Campo and Arévalo, the Guadarrama through the AP-6 toll tunnel or over the Alto del León, and the M-40 or M-50 round Madrid to the terminals. From Medina del Campo, already on the A-6, it is 175 km; from Peñafiel, via Aranda de Duero and the A-1, 182 km.
The problem with Barajas from the province is the time of day. Morning international flights board before the first AVE reaches Chamartín, and on the way back many land at night, when the last train to Valladolid has already gone. That is why a car with a driver from home, with the flight number on the booking, is the usual way of solving those extremes, and the pickup in arrivals with a name sign the way of getting back without thinking about timetables. The price is fixed before booking and is per car, so a family flying together pays a single amount and gets out at the right terminal, suitcases and all.
Which airport suits each district?
Tierra de Campos is the district with Villanubla closest to hand: Medina de Rioseco sits on the same N-601 that passes the airport on the way to the capital, and the trip is 30 km, from 54,46 €. If the flight leaves from Villanubla, from Rioseco, Cigales or the capital itself there is no question. The capital and its surrounding towns sit in the middle: Villanubla 14 km away and Barajas 207 km, so the flight decides, and when the destination exists at both airports the timetable and the ticket price usually weigh more than the distance to the airport.
Tierra de Medina, Tordesillas and Tierra de Pinares look south. Medina del Campo, Olmedo and Tordesillas sit on the A-6 or a step from it, and going up to Villanubla means crossing the province in the opposite direction to Madrid: from Medina del Campo it is 61 km to Villanubla against 175 km to Barajas, a smaller difference than it seems when the Barajas flight leaves at a better time or costs less. The Ribera del Duero has its own two exits: Peñafiel reaches Villanubla via the A-11 and the capital in 77 km, and Barajas via Aranda and the A-1, which enters Madrid from the north and leaves the airport close at hand via the M-40.
Train to Chamartín and on to the airport, or car direct?
For Barajas there is a third way worth knowing: the AVE from Campo Grande or from Medina del Campo AV to Madrid-Chamartín and, from there, the Cercanías to T4 or the metro with a change to terminals 1, 2 and 3. It works well for one person with little luggage and a mid-morning or afternoon flight, and usually costs less than the car. It stops working with early flights, because the first train does not arrive in time, with large suitcases, because the changes punish them, and with groups, because each ticket is paid separately while the car is shared. Renfe timetables change by season and need checking on the day the flight is booked.
The direct car, your own or with a driver, solves the three cases where the train fails. Your own means paying Barajas parking for the whole trip and driving over the mountains in the small hours; the car with a driver costs a known amount before you set off and gives back the journey time. In an honest comparison, the train wins for the lone midday traveller and the car for the family at dawn, and in between you look at the flight time, the luggage and how many are travelling. The knowledge-centre piece on taxi, VTC, train or coach for an airport sets out the method that works for any province.
How do you book, and what happens if the flight changes?
The transfer is booked with the flight number, the airport and the terminal, and the price is fixed before confirming; for the outward leg the driver works out the home pickup with the margin the airline asks for to check in and clear security, and for the return waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. The app follows the flight: if it is late, the pickup moves with it, and if it is brought forward or cancelled, you are told so the service can be rearranged under the conditions on the help page. From Villanubla, with a small airport and a single exit, the pickup is simple; at Barajas it pays to state the terminal clearly, because T4 is a long way from the other three.
Two situations particular to the province deserve a line. The first is diversion for fog: when Villanubla closes, airlines may divert to another airport or cancel, and a transfer booked to Villanubla may end up needing a pickup somewhere else; let us know as soon as the airline announces it. The second is Holy Week, which in Valladolid and Medina de Rioseco is of international tourist interest and coincides with holiday departures: the processions close streets in the capital's centre, especially on Good Friday, and bookings to Barajas bunch into a few days, so the prudent thing is to book early and set the pickup away from the procession routes.
Frequently asked questions
How much is Valladolid to Villanubla airport?
The published "from" fare is 34,21 € per car, for 14 km and about 21 min. The calculator gives the exact price with your address, date and time.
And from Valladolid to Barajas?
From 261,98 € per car, for 207 km along the A-62 and A-6 and about 165 min in daytime with no incidents. You book with the flight number and the terminal.
How do I know whether my flight leaves from Villanubla or Barajas?
Your airline booking says so, with the airport code. Villanubla has few routes and several seasonal ones, so if the search engine offered you Madrid it is because the destination is not flown from Valladolid on those dates; check at aena.es before booking the transfer.
What if my flight to Villanubla is diverted because of fog?
Tell us as soon as the airline informs you: the service is rearranged to the actual arrival airport under the conditions on the help page, with the price of the new route fixed before confirming. The driver follows the flight in the app in any case.
From Medina de Rioseco, is Villanubla the better choice?
If your flight leaves from there, yes: it is on the same León road, 30 km away, from 54,46 €. If the destination is only flown from Madrid, the car goes straight to Barajas without passing through the capital.
