Madrid from Valladolid: IFEMA, Parque Warner, concerts and matches, the Estación Sur and hospital appointments, by AVE from Campo Grande, coach, your own car or a car with a driver

From Valladolid, Madrid can be done in four ways: the AVE or the Avant from Campo Grande to Chamartín and then metro or Cercanías; the scheduled coach; your own car along the A-6 and over the mountains; or a car with a driver that goes door to door. To IFEMA the transfer costs from 245,10 € per car, with about 158 min on the road; to the Estación Sur, from 243,42 €. For Parque Warner, the stadiums and concert venues and the Madrid hospitals, each destination page works out the price from every town in the province. The train wins for someone travelling alone and coming back in daylight; the car wins when there is material, children, an appointment with waiting time or a return in the small hours.

What works best from Valladolid for each of the five Madrid destinations?

The high-speed train leaving Campo Grande crosses the Guadarrama through the rail tunnel and arrives at Chamartín, in the north of Madrid. From there IFEMA is fairly close, but the venue is on metro line 8 and Chamartín is not, so there is at least one change. The Estación Sur, at Méndez Álvaro, is reached by Cercanías through the tunnel under the centre. The big hospitals are spread across the city and each needs its own metro combination. Parque Warner, in San Martín de la Vega to the south-east, is the hardest without a car: train to Madrid, Cercanías and then an interurban bus. For someone travelling alone, with a backpack and in no hurry to get back, the AVE plus city transport is reasonable in almost every case.

Your own car runs down the A-62 to Tordesillas or south towards Adanero, joins the A-6 and crosses the mountains through the AP-6 toll tunnel or over the Alto del León. The drive is easy as far as the edge of Madrid; the hard part comes afterwards. Madrid has low-emission zones with restrictions depending on the vehicle's environmental label, and the specific rules, which have changed several times, are published by the City Council on its website: it is worth reading them before setting off. Add to that paid parking at IFEMA on show days, hospital car parks that are nearly always full in the morning, and the exit from a stadium, where traffic is closed off. A car with a driver removes all three: it drops you at the door, does not park and collects you at an agreed point.

How do you get to a trade fair or congress at IFEMA from Valladolid with exhibitor material?

Many companies in the province that exhibit at the Feria de Valladolid end up taking their stand to IFEMA as well, and the problem is the same multiplied by the distance: boxes, roll-up displays, samples and two or three people who have to be inside before the doors open to the public. On build-up days the schedule is set by each fair's organisers and does not match the first train. A car with a large boot, or two coordinated for the same arrival time, leaves the warehouse or the office and drops everything at the hall's exhibitor entrance. From Valladolid it is 197 km, and with a business account every journey of the fair is grouped on one invoice broken down by service.

For the trade visitor going and returning the same day, the AVE to Chamartín and the metro are the natural choice if the fair closes in the late afternoon. The sums change when the day ends with a dinner with clients or when colleagues come from the Tierra de Medina or the Ribera, who already have a journey behind them before reaching Campo Grande. From Medina del Campo the direct transfer to IFEMA costs from 204,92 €, and from Peñafiel, which heads towards Aranda and the A-1 and enters Madrid from the north, it is 183 km. If a colleague arrives by plane, Barajas is next to the venue, and the terminal pickup can be chained with the arrival at the fair within the same team booking.

How do you plan a day at Parque Warner with children from Valladolid?

Parque Warner is in San Martín de la Vega, south-east of Madrid, and from the A-6 you have to skirt the capital on the M-40 or the M-50 to get there. By public transport the day starts very early: AVE to Chamartín, Cercanías southwards and an interurban bus to the gate, with the children, the backpack and the pushchair in tow. That is why most families in the province go by car. A transfer with a driver collects you at home, in Laguna de Duero, in Arroyo de la Encomienda or in the city, and drops you at the park entrance. Child seats are requested when booking, giving each child's age and weight, and if you bring a pushchair or there are five or more of you a people carrier is assigned; the park's page works out the price from each town.

The delicate part is the return. The park closes late in high season, everyone leaves at once, and a family that came in its own car faces the car-park exit, the M-50, the A-6 and the mountain crossing with the children asleep in the back and someone at the wheel who has been on their feet all day. With a driver, the pickup time is set when booking, adjusted by message if the final show runs late, and the whole group travels back together with no driving shifts. For a group of cousins or two families, one large vehicle usually works out more sensibly than two cars and two parking fees. On spring weekends and at Christmas it pays to book early, because the whole park's return is concentrated in the same short window.

How do you get back to Valladolid after a concert or a match in Madrid?

A stadium concert or a night match ends after the last AVE to Valladolid has gone, and the coach does not cover that slot either. The real options are three: sleep in Madrid, drive back after several hours on your feet or book a car that waits. Staying over makes the night more expensive and means returning the next day; driving the A-6 and the Alto del León in the small hours, with fog or ice in winter, is not the most prudent choice. For a group of friends sharing a per-car price, a booked return is usually the most balanced option. Central Madrid is 190 km from Valladolid, about 154 min in daytime with no incidents, and at night the road is usually clearer.

The detail that decides the night is the pickup point. When a big event ends, the police close the access roads and meeting at the stadium door does not work: the car cannot get there and the group gets lost among thousands of people. What works is agreeing, when booking, a specific junction a few streets beyond the traffic closure, on the side facing the way out towards the A-6, and walking there. If the match goes to extra time or the concert runs long, the time is changed by message. The Madrid events page explains how that point is chosen for each venue and works out the price from each town in the province. For the outward trip, if the group prefers the train, you can book the return only.

When is the Estación Sur useful for someone leaving Valladolid province?

The Estación Sur coach station is at Méndez Álvaro, south of the centre, next to metro line 6 and a Cercanías station. It is the main hub for long-distance coaches to the south and east of the peninsula. Lines arriving from Valladolid end in Madrid at whichever station each operating company sets, which is not always this one, so it is worth checking the ticket. For someone coming from Valladolid, the Estación Sur matters above all as a connection point: the student going home by coach, the worker joining an overnight line or the older person visiting family in another province who prefers a direct coach to a train with changes.

The transfer to Méndez Álvaro makes sense when the connecting coach leaves early and no train arrives with a margin, when travelling with large suitcases or boxes, or when the traveller finds platforms and metro corridors difficult. From Valladolid it is about 154 min to the bus bay, and from Tordesillas, which has the A-6 on its doorstep, the price starts at 230,64 €. On arrival, if someone comes back to Madrid by coach and carries on to the province, the driver can wait at the station with a name sign; if the coach is late, the waiting included and what happens next are in the terms of service, which are read before booking.

How do you approach an appointment at a Madrid hospital from Valladolid?

Most appointments in the province are handled at Río Hortega or the Clínico, but some cases lead to Madrid: a referral to a reference centre, service or unit of the National Health System, designated by the Ministry of Health for uncommon conditions, a second opinion or a specialist from a private insurer. The big Madrid hospitals are spread out: La Paz and Ramón y Cajal in the north, Doce de Octubre in the south, Gregorio Marañón near the Retiro and the Fundación Jiménez Díaz in Moncloa, right where the A-6 comes in. Each has its own access roads and outpatient buildings, and the Madrid hospitals page works out the price from each town in the province to the relevant one.

An early appointment in Madrid means leaving Valladolid in the dark, and the return depends on when the consultation or test ends. It is booked as a return trip with waiting: the car collects you at home, drops you at the door of the outpatient building, waits and takes you home, with a companion if you wish and with an adapted vehicle if the person uses a wheelchair. It is not an ambulance or medical transport: it is for someone who can travel seated and needs no care during the journey. If the doctor has prescribed medical transport, the health service itself arranges it. For an older person, someone convalescing or a child going to a test on an empty stomach, avoiding the Campo Grande platform, the change at Chamartín and the metro makes the whole day easier.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a taxi or a car with a driver from Valladolid to IFEMA?

The published 'from' fare is 245,10 € per car, not per person, and the calculator gives the exact figure with your address, date and time. It is fixed before you book and does not change with M-40 traffic or the time you reach the venue.

Can you wait for me during an appointment at a Madrid hospital?

Yes, it is booked as a return trip with waiting and agreed before setting off. For a test lasting several hours, say so when booking. It is a car with a driver, not medical transport: if you need care during the journey, an ambulance is required.

Can you collect me after a concert that ends in the small hours?

Yes, if the return is booked in advance. When booking you agree a pickup point a few streets from the venue, outside the traffic closure, and if the concert runs late you change the time by message. Leaving a stadium is not the moment to improvise.

Do you provide child seats if we go to Parque Warner?

They are requested when booking, giving each child's age and weight, and if you bring a pushchair a vehicle with room is assigned. Outward and return prices are fixed before you confirm.

Who pays the AP-6 tunnel toll?

How the toll is handled is explained on the help page, and it is worth reading before booking rather than assuming. If you prefer the Alto del León or the tunnel because of the weather, say so in the booking.
