Peñafiel castle overlooks the town from the top of the hill and houses the Provincial Wine Museum, a common starting point for touring the Ribera wineries. The road up is steep and parking at the top is limited.

On arrival: Ribera del Duero vallisoletana

Peñafiel, with its long castle on the hilltop and the Coso square, is the centre of the Valladolid part of the Ribera del Duero. The valley's wineries draw visits where nobody wants to drive back, and the capital is close enough for a same-day round trip.

When demand peaks

• Grape harvest in the Ribera (September and October): During the harvest the Ribera del Duero wineries get more visits and tastings, and autumn weekends around Peñafiel book up. For a winery route it pays to arrange both the car and the visits well ahead.

Tip: Before booking a transfer to Villanubla, confirm your flight actually leaves from there: many routes are seasonal and flying from Barajas is the norm.
